What is IVF?

IVF is a medical procedure where an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the body in a laboratory. Once fertilisation occurs, the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus to develop naturally. This procedure is often recommended for couples facing fertility issues such as blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm count, or unexplained infertility.

The IVF Procedure In Singapore

The IVF procedure typically involves the following steps:

1. Initial Consultation And Assessment

During the initial consultation, a fertility specialist will evaluate the couple’s medical history, conduct physical examinations, and perform tests such as blood work and ultrasounds to determine the cause of infertility.

2. Ovarian Stimulation

The woman undergoes hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This step is closely monitored through ultrasounds and blood tests to ensure optimal results.

3. Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs have matured, they are retrieved using a minimally invasive procedure performed under sedation wherein  a thin needle will be guided through the vaginal wall to access the ovaries and retrieve the eggs.

4. Fertilisation

The retrieved eggs are fertilised with sperm in a controlled laboratory environment. Depending on the case, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used to enhance fertilisation chances. It is where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg to increase the chances of fertilisation.

5. Embryo Transfer

After fertilisation, one or more embryos are transferred to the uterus. This is a simple procedure that does not require anaesthesia.

6. Pregnancy Test

About two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test is conducted to determine if pregnancy has been achieved.
