Dr Alex Tham is an Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) – Head and Neck Surgeon at Asian Healthcare Specialists in Singapore. Outside of work, I like to stay active and connected. Tennis is one of my favourite ways to unwind and stay fit—it’s challenging yet incredibly rewarding. I also make it a point to keep up a regular gym routine; it not only supports my physical health but also helps me manage the demands of my professional life. And, of course, spending quality time with friends and family is a priority. They keep me grounded and remind me of the balance that’s so essential in both personal and professional life.
I was drawn to ENT because it has a unique blend of both surgical and medical aspects, allowing me to use my hands and apply precise technical skills. The anatomy of the head and neck is incredibly intricate and fascinating, offering a unique challenge that keeps me continually engaged and learning. This field allows me to make a tangible difference in my patients’ lives, whether through complex surgeries or nuanced medical management.
Patients should consider consulting an ENT specialist when they experience persistent issues related to the ear, nose, throat, head, or neck that don’t improve with standard treatment or when symptoms affect their quality of life. For example, chronic sinus problems, recurrent ear infections, persistent sore throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, and hearing loss are all conditions that warrant further evaluation by an ENT. Early consultation can lead to quicker relief and prevent complications, especially in cases like obstructive sleep apnoea, chronic ear disease, or growths in the head and neck area.
I stay current with advancements in ENT by actively participating as faculty at conferences and specialized courses, which provides a platform to both learn from and contribute to leading-edge discussions in the field. I’m also involved in medical education, which keeps me engaged with emerging research and allows me to share knowledge with peers and upcoming professionals. There are quite a few common misconceptions about ENT health. One is the belief that we need to clean our ears regularly, often using cotton buds. In reality, the ears are self-cleaning, and using cotton buds can actually cause harm by pushing wax further in or irritating the ear canal. Another common myth is the idea that swallowing rice or bread can help push down a fish bone if it’s accidentally swallowed. This can actually make the situation worse. I ensure patients have a solid understanding of their treatment options by taking the time to explain each option in simple, relatable terms. I discuss the benefits, potential risks, and expected outcomes, and I encourage them to ask questions to clarify any doubts. I also provide them with additional resources, like pamphlets or reputable online sources, to review at their own pace. My goal is to empower patients to make informed choices that they feel comfortable and confident about.
I maintain my work-life balance by staying active and connecting with the people who matter to me. Playing tennis and hitting the gym helps me stay physically and mentally refreshed, while exploring new eateries is a fun way to unwind and enjoy different experiences. Spending quality time with family and friends also keeps me grounded and recharged, allowing me to stay fully engaged and present with my patients.

Recognizing symptoms early is also key—persistent nasal congestion, facial pressure, frequent sinus infections, or loud snoring paired with daytime sleepiness could indicate an ENT issue. If these symptoms persist, consult an ENT specialist for an assessment. Early detection and treatment can prevent complications and improve quality of life.
