My father is an obstetrician and gynaecologist. I was inspired by the work that he did, and that led me to follow in his footsteps
Generally speaking, women below the age of 35 should consider seeing a fertility specialist if they have been trying to conceive for 1 year without success. For those above 35, they should seek help after 6 months. If there are known medical conditions such as endometriosis, PCOS or fibroids, then they should come for a consultation sooner rather than later.
By attending conferences and other continuing medical education events, reading journals with the latest publications.
I believe in educating patients with knowledge of their condition, and treatment options, so that they are empowered to make an informed decision about their care.
It is surprising how many patients are unaware that women cannot make new eggs, and that they are born with all the eggs they will ever have. As a result, fertility declines with age, as the number and quality of eggs decreases with time.
I believe in having detailed discussions with them about their various options, with pros and cons of each option.
I like to travel with my wife to experience different cultures in other countries, and try to have a break from time to time to be able to do this. To be honest, it is a challenge to be able to totally disconnect from patient care even when you are halfway across the world, thanks to mobile phones and data plans. Unless you are in a very remote area without connectivity…
As a famous sports brand’s tagline goes: Just Do It. Many couples are shocked when they are told the recommended frequency of sexual intercourse to optimise chances of pregnancy are 2-3 times per week. They feel that they are too tired to have sex that often. I tell them that not everyone is a sniper where they can achieve one shot, one kill.
“Every individual’s fertility and pregnancy journey is unique, and it deserves a personalised approach grounded in compassion and collaboration. Seeking expert care can provide clarity and confidence, empowering patients to make informed decisions and achieve their goals. With the right guidance, there is always hope and a path forward.”
