Guide To Shingles Vaccine – Singapore Price And Where To Get It. Shingles, caused by the varicella-zoster virus (the same virus responsible for chickenpox), can lead to painful and debilitating symptoms. Fortunately, vaccination is a highly effective way to prevent shingles and its complications. There are two main types of shingles vaccines available: the recombinant shingles vaccine (Shingrix) and the live shingles vaccine (Zostavax).
How Vaccination Helps Prevent Shingles
Shingles vaccines help your body create a strong defense against the varicella-zoster virus. By getting vaccinated, you significantly reduce the risk of developing shingles and its painful complications, such as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), pneumonia, and encephalitis.
Understanding The Different Types Of Vaccine
- Shingrix (Recombinant Shingles Vaccine): This vaccine does not contain the live virus but includes a “code” that helps your body recognize and fight the virus. It is administered in two doses, with the second dose given two to six months after the first. This is the vaccine that is currently available in Singapore.
- Zostavax (Live Shingles Vaccine): This vaccine contains a weakened form of the varicella-zoster virus. Studies suggest that this form of vaccine is less effective than Shingrix. According to the National Centre For Infectious Diseases, “Shingrix confers more than 90 per cent protection, while Zostavax provides 50 to 60 per cent protection.”

How Many Doses Are Needed And How Long They Last
Shingrix requires two doses for full protection. The protection lasts at least seven years, and possibly longer.
Shingles Vaccine – Singapore Price And Comparison With Malaysia Price
In Singapore, the cost of the Shingrix vaccine is approximately $320 – $420 per dose. The total cost for the two-dose regimen is around $720 to $800. You may also need to pay for a doctor’s consultation which may range from about S$60-S$80. Shingles vaccination is currently not subsidised by the government nor claimable under MediSave.
In Malaysia, the prices may vary, but it is generally around RM1,200 (approximately S$365) for 1 dose, and a discounted price of around RM1,900 (approximately S$580) for 2 doses.
Given the relatively small cost difference between the Singapore price and the Malaysia price for shingles vaccination (particularly when spread over 2 doses taken months apart), those considering the take the vaccine can consider doing so in Singapore. However, should you be travelling to Malaysia on a regular basis, or intending to also do a comprehensive health screening, making a side trip to one of our healthcare partners in Malaysia might well be worth it as well.
