Speaker #2: Mr George Foo, CEO Of Health365 On Affordable Healthcare Costs In Malaysia

Mr George Foo presented Health365’s research on medical cost in Malaysia, compared to Singapore and other countries including Australia, India, Indonesia and the UK. The presentation gave invaluable insights as comprehensive and accurate open-source information on the cost of cancer treatment, medical imaging and health screening services in Malaysia and other countries was very scarce.

Health365 had, using triangulation of various data points (from open online sources, various healthcare partners, and 1st hand patient information), found that the medical costs in Malaysia were in general about half to a third of the costs in Singapore. It was also found that in certain cases, medical treatment in Malaysia may be cheaper than in Indonesia. For other developed regions such as Australia and the UK, while public healthcare may be heavily subsidised or even free, waiting times to get an appointment with a specialist doctor can be very long (compared to just 1 week or so in Malaysia private hospitals). Private healthcare was costly in those developed regions.

Mr Foo highlighted to participants the 3 main reasons why people can consider seeking affordable healthcare services in Malaysia:

  • Shorter Appointment Waiting Times – Typically shorter waiting times compared to the public healthcare in Singapore, allowing for earlier consultations and medical intervention.
  • More Affordable Healthcare – Cost of private healthcare in Malaysia is lower compared to private healthcare in Singapore.
  • Convenient Locations In Johor – With Malaysia just a short distance away, accessing top-notch healthcare is both easy and convenient for Singapore residents. To distance from Singapore to many hospitals in Johor may be less than the distance between Boon Lay MRT station to Changi Airport (approx. 40km).
