IVF In Singapore

For those who face challenges when it comes to conceiving naturally, medical advancements such as IVF opens up possibilities. If you are considering an IVF, this article will help you understand IVF in Singapore – what it is, the process involved, side effects, and cost.

What Is IVF?

In Vitro Fertilisation or IVF involves the fertilisation of an egg with sperm outside the human body. It is a sophisticated assisted reproductive technology (ART). The term “in vitro” refers to the controlled environment in a laboratory, where fertilisation occurs in a dish or test tube. The resulting embryos are then carefully nurtured for a few days before being transferred into the woman’s uterus, where they have the potential to implant and develop into a healthy pregnancy.

What Is The Process For IVF?

There are numerous processes involved in an In Vitro Fertilization or IVF.

Step 1: Ovarian Stimulation

The process of IVF begins with fertility medications typically administered through injections of fertility hormones. This is to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, instead of the usual single egg that is released during a natural menstrual cycle. Multiple eggs increases the chance of developing an embryo.

Step 2: Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs have sufficiently matured, they are collected through a minor surgical procedure known as egg retrieval. A thin needle is guided through the vaginal wall to access the ovaries and retrieve the eggs.

Step 3: Fertilisation

The collected eggs and sperm are then combined in a laboratory dish or test tube, where fertilisation will take place. In some cases, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used, where a single sperm is directly injected into an egg to increase the chances of fertilization.

Step 4: Embryo Culture

The fertilized eggs develop into embryos and will be closely monitored in the laboratory for several days. The healthiest embryos are selected for transfer.

Step 5: Embryo Transfer

One or more selected embryos will be transferred into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter.

Step 6: Pregnancy Test

Approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted to determine if the IVF procedure was successful.

Legality Of IVF In Singapore

IVF in Singapore is legal and no age limits are set for women who want to undergo the procedure. As with any medical procedure, potential IVF candidates should consult with qualified fertility specialists to ensure a safe and successful fertility journey.

What Are The Side Effects Of IVF?

As with any other medical procedure, IVF has side effects. Some common side effects associated with IVF are:

  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome or OHSS, a dangerous condition wherein the ovaries respond excessively to the fertility medications used to stimulate egg production. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and fluid retention.
  • Multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.), which can carry additional health risks for both the mother and the babies.
  • Ectopic Pregnancy where the embryo implants outside the uterus, usually in the fallopian tubes.
  • Discomfort, pain, bleeding, infection or allergic reactions during the procedure.

How Much Does An IVF Cost In Singapore?

The cost of IVF in Singapore depends whether the patient chooses a public or private hospital. According to online sources, the cost of IVF treatment at a public hospital ranges from S$10,000 to S$15,000 per IVF cycle. For private medical centres, it may cost between S$13,000 to S$22,000 per IVF cycle.

Are There Subsidies For IVF?

According to the Ministry of Health, eligible couples can receive up to 75% in co-funding from the Government for ART treatment cycles, for a maximum of three fresh and three frozen ART cycles.

Furthermore, Medisave may also be used to cover the cost of IVF treatment (up to S$15,000 per patient).
