Ovarian Cysts require early detection so it is important to know your symptoms and where to get treatment in Singapore.

What Are The Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian Cysts are small sacs of fluid tissue that develop in your ovaries. There can be different types of ovarian cysts, so it is important to know which symptoms to look out for as treatments also can vary.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts can be two types – functional and non- functional. Non-functional cysts are usually not related to a normal menstrual cycle. Functional cysts are the type to develop every month through a follicle on one of the ovaries. This happens during the process of ovulation. The follicle shrinks after the egg is released, however if it continues to grow, that’s what can cause a functional cyst. Functional cysts are formed either from a follicle or corpus luteum.

Functional Cysts

Follicular cysts form around the midpoint of the cycle when the follicle grows despite the release of the egg process. If it continues to grow, eventually it causes a functional cyst. When the follicle normally releases an egg during your cycle, your body produces additional hormones anticipating conception. These hormones cause the follicle to transform into corpus luteum, forming another type of functional cyst.

Non- functional Cysts

The cysts not related to your menstrual cycle are called non-functional. Cystadenomas develop on the surface of one of the ovaries filled with watery fluid or mucus. When uterine cells grow on the ovary, it causes an endometrial cyst. Another type of cyst can form from embryonic cells and are called dermoid cysts; however, these are very uncommon.

What Are The Symptoms?

The most common symptoms include bloating, irregular menstrual cycle, pelvic discomfort and lower abdominal pain. If left untreated, cysts can lead to further complications. The best way to detect ovarian cysts would be an ultrasound.

Ovarian Cyst Treatment in Singapore

Different types of ovarian cysts will require different treatment methods. Whilst functional cysts can often be resolved on their own it can still take several cycles to heal. The non-functional cysts will require medical treatment or surgical removal. Most cysts are removed through keyhole surgery (laparoscopic surgery).
