What Is A PSA test?
PSA stands for Prostate-specific Antigen. It is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous cells of the prostate gland in males. In a PSA test, a blood sample is collected from a patient’s arm and will be analysed to measure the level of PSA in the blood. A PSA test is reported as nanograms of PSA per milliliter (ng/ml) of blood. In general, high levels of PSA may indicate the presence of prostate cancer in a patient.
What If I Have A High Level of PSA?
If a patient who have no symptoms of prostate cancer chooses to have PSA prostate cancer test and is found to have a high level of PSA, a health provider might recommend further PSA tests, and/or other tests such as Digital Rectal Exams (DREs), imaging tests, or prostate biopsy to further confirm the finding. It is to note that high levels of PSA may also indicate other conditions that affect the prostate and that the PSA prostate cancer test by itself does not provide accurate diagnostic information.
It is of utmost importance to discuss with your healthcare provider the benefits and risks of having a PSA prostate cancer test.
Aside from screening for early signs of prostate cancer, PSA prostate cancer test can also be used to analyse the effectiveness of a treatment or to check for recurring cancer.
