Research Shows Aspirin May Lower Colorectal Cancer Risk For People With Additional Risk Factors

History Of Aspirin Use For Colorectal Cancer Prevention

According to the CancerHealth article, in 2016 the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force officially recommended aspirin as a means of colorectal cancer prevention for older individuals. However, this recommendation was reversed in 2021 as more recent data seemed to cast doubt on the benefits of aspirin for cancer.

New Study Shows That Aspirin May Lower Colorectal Cancer Risk For Patients With Risk Factors

There is now a study that suggests that for “the right patient”, aspirin may help to lower the risk of colorectal cancer. This study led by researchers from Harvard Medical School, involved more than 100,000 men and women receiving aspirin over 30 years. The study found a greater absolute reduction in colorectal cancer risk among participants with an “unhealthier” lifestyle (i.e. smoked more, took more alcohol, had less physical activity and poorer diet quality) compared with those who lead a “healthier” lifestyle. The relative reduction in risk (i.e. decrease in risk from where they started) was similar between the two groups. The researchers conclude that the study result thus suggests that aspirin may be more useful for preventing colorectal cancer in people with such additional risk factors.

As of Sep 2024, the U.S. Preventative Task Force has not issued any updated guidelines based on this study, but the research may “point the way toward more personalised CRC prevention strategies”, says the article.

Colorectal Cancer Prevention And Screening

Despite the results of the study cited in the CancerHealth article, people should strive to lead a healthy lifestyle to reduce the preventable risk factors, rather than try to mitigate the risk factors with additional medication.
